Small Movements

A solo sound performance by Adam Basanta

Thursday, August 3, 2023, 6 - 7 pm

Price: $0.00

Join us for a sonic performance by Adam Basanta supporting our current main gallery exhibition, Every Beloved Object, on Thursday, August 3, 2023, from 6 -7 PM.

Small Movements is a physical sound performance using tuned microphone feedback, modified amplification techniques, and kinetic elements. All sounds are created through the active interaction of handheld microphones, speaker cones, custom software, and physical filters.

The performance meditates on the instabilities of sound production—the quiet, fragile and delicate phenomena that result from intertwining sonic technologies with the performer’s physical gestures. Handheld microphones produce delicate, low-volume, harmonic feedback melodies and chords; jars are placed on speakers as physical sonic filters; cassette tape recorders record their surroundings and play it back in phased loops.

Audience members will observe as the performer relies on small movements, small changes in the relationship between themselves and technology, and technologies to audience, to create a sense of mystery and wonder as to how the musical results are achieved.

Accessibility Note: General seating for this performance will be staged low to the ground. Please email us if you require additional accommodations. Our team is happy to meet your needs or provide additional seating as required.

About the exhibition:

Every Beloved Object explores oblique connections between recycling processes, monumental architecture, undiscovered ruins, and the intrinsic and necessary “strangeness with which we encounter the fact that we are responsible for a mass extinction event” (All Art is Ecological, Timothy Morton).

Organized by the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington with the support of the Municipality of Clarington.
